The ECOHIVE Academy opens its doors

A new interactive and educational centre situated within the Marsaskala Family Park has opened its door to the general public, welcoming all those interested in learning more about Malta’s waste management systems and good practices.

Developed by WasteServ Malta, the ECOHIVE Academy is the first such centre, designed to educate about waste management and promote sustainable practices through a variety of interactive exhibits and digital experiences.

Together with Minister for the Environment, Energy and Regeneration of the Grand Harbour Miriam Dalli and WasteServ CEO Richard Bilocca, members of the press were invited to witness the experiences offered by the hub.

Minister Dalli welcomed the finalisation of the innovative project, stating that the ECOHIVE Academy represents the government’s vision for the future of waste management. "By encouraging the public to recognise waste as a valuable resource, we are paving the way for a more environmentally conscious society while contributing to the transition to a circular economy. We also know that education is key and I augur that this educational centre will help shorten the gap between people’s perception of waste and reality," said Minister Dalli.

The ECOHIVE Academy offers an immersive experience for visitors of all ages, using augmented reality, interactive displays, and engaging digital games to explain the importance of sustainability and waste management. This centre provides an innovative approach to learning, making education about sustainability and waste management both engaging and accessible to everyone.

WasteServ CEO Richard Bilocca, emphasised the importance of investing in future generations. “The ECOHIVE Academy is not only making learning more enjoyable but is also involving people of all ages to be part of this change,” he stated. This initiative underscores WasteServ's ongoing commitment to education.

The ECOHIVE Academy is divided into different zones, each dedicated to showcasing various aspects of waste management that are part of the ECOHIVE project. Visitors, equipped with tablets, can explore these zones using QR codes, unlocking fun games and accessing valuable information about the importance of effective waste management and its role in building a circular economy.

The ECOHIVE Academy is open from Tuesday to Sunday, from 9 am to 4 pm. Admission is free. For more information visit here.
