When it comes to our pets, there’s nothing we wouldn’t do to ensure their well-being and safety. However, in doing so, it is important to also consider what is best for the environment. With little changes in our daily choices, we can prioritise both our pets and the environment.
Switch to biodegradable poop bags
Picking up pet waste, whether from a litter box or the side of a pavement, is never pleasant but it doesn’t have to be damaging to the environment too. Replace those single-use plastic bags with biodegradable and compostable poop bags.
Also, next time you need to run a quick errand, why don’t you use it as an excuse to take your pup instead of your car. Walk to the store, and you’d be making your dog happy, get some exercise, and cut down on carbon emissions. Plus, you don’t have to waste precious time looking for parking.
Make playtime fun and eco-friendly
Instead of plastic, choose toys that are made of natural, recyclable or reclaimed materials such as re-purposed fabric or hemp. You can also opt for durable toys, instead of cheap flimsy ones, that are able to withstand the fiercest tug-o-war games with your dog. Thus, consuming less in the long run.
Look around your house for items that can be used as toys. That toilet paper roll that’s just finished or the cardboard box that came with your grocery shopping can keep your cat entertained for hours.
Your choice of cat litter matters
The environmental impact of your cat litter is not the first thing that comes to mind when at the pet shop. Traditional litters, such as clay or crystal litters, are mined and excavated from the Earth's surface in a process called strip mining with all the negative environmental impacts that comes with it.
Look for litter that is biodegradable such as that made from recycled newspapers, sawdust or wood fibres. And don’t use liners, they are an unnecessary waste.
Join the adopt don’t shop movement
Although not directly related to the environment, as animal lovers, we cannot leave this one out.
There’s nothing like the love of a pet, especially of those that had a troubled past. Knowing that you can help them recover from bad experiences and giving them the loving home, they deserve may strengthen your bond even more.
