Ambjent Għalik: Hundreds visit funfair at ECOHIVE Academy

The funfair hosted by WasteServ at the ECOHIVE Academy in Marsaskala proved to be a hit, as hundreds of families gathered on Sunday to enjoy a packed day of free, eco-conscious entertainment and educational activities.

Timed just ahead of World Environment Day, the event blended fun and learning to raise awareness about sustainability and responsible waste management. “Engaging families and children in sustainability is crucial for fostering a culture of environmental responsibility. Events like this funfair educate and inspire collective action towards a greener Malta," Environment Minister Miriam Dalli commented.

WasteServ CEO Richard Bilocca said that “events like these are important for WasteServ. Children have consistently expressed a clear message – they want to live in a better, more sustainable environment. Just as these initiatives raise awareness among younger generations, it's equally important for the public to continue their efforts in waste separation so we can keep moving towards a circular economy."

Children and adults alike took part in a lively programme featuring live magic shows, craft stations, digital exhibits, and interactive games such as climbing walls, football darts, and giant Jenga. A highlight for the little ones was meeting WasteServ's eco-heroes – General Buzz, Commander Yellow, and the cheeky Garbage Monster – who brought the message of environmental care to life through playful interaction.

The funfair also served as a platform for the winners of the Malta Waste Reduction Awards, who presented their innovative projects and shared ideas on how to reduce waste and transition towards a circular economy.

Key national agencies/entities including Ambjent Malta, Circular Economy Malta, the Environment and Resources Authority (ERA), and the Energy and Water Agency contributed with hands-on activities and informative exhibits, helping reinforce the theme of sustainability throughout the event.

This successful initiative is part of WasteServ's broader effort to engage the public in building a greener future. Through events like these, the ECOHIVE concept continues to steer Malta away from landfill dependency and towards a truly circular economy, ensuring a cleaner, healthier environment for future generations.

As World Environment Day approaches on June 5, focusing on ending plastic pollution, initiatives like the ECOHIVE funfair highlight Malta's commitment to environmental education and sustainable practices.
