New automated glass sorting line produces 3,000 tonnes of the highest-quality material to date

WasteServ has successfully processed and made available 3,000 tonnes of glass cullet, equivalent to more than 13 million glass bottles. This marks the first time such high-quality material has been offered, following the installation of a new automated glass sorting line last June.

By reintroducing 3,000 tonnes of glass into the circular economy, WasteServ ensures that this material, which can be recycled endlessly, is given a new lease of life, reducing its negative environmental impact and conserving raw materials.

Environment Minister Miriam Dalli praised this achievement, stating, “As a country, we are now seeing the benefits of this €2.5 million investment as we continue working towards the EU’s recycling targets. WasteServ’s efforts highlight the importance of sustainable waste management, where waste is viewed as a valuable resource.”

“This new facility is producing higher-grade glass cullet with greater efficiency, in line with WasteServ’s commitment to Malta’s transition towards a more circular economy,” explained WasteServ CEO Richard Bilocca.

The automated glass sorting line, inaugurated last June, produces furnace-ready glass cullet, meaning no additional processing is required by manufacturers. This allows the glass to be immediately reintegrated into the production chain to create bottles and jars from recycled glass.

This investment is part of WasteServ’s ongoing strategy to modernise its infrastructure and transform waste into valuable resources. Just a few weeks ago, a new pasteuriser was installed to process organic waste by-products into agricultural-grade compost. Additionally, WasteServ is working to maximise the use of existing landfills to preserve agricultural land.
